Australia Day

One of the largest celebrations held throughout the country year after year is Australia Day. Celebrated on January 26th, Australia day is a public holiday that honours the arrival of the first British Fleet on Australian soil.

Visitors to the Gold Coast often join in the festivities to commemorate the day, with many community events held around the nation each year; including barbecues, ceremonies, parades, live entertainment and fireworks.

Australia Day Gold Coast Events 2020, Broadwater Fireworks Celebration

Australia Day recognises that on 26 January 1788, the first British fleet arrived at Port Jackson in Australia. The event is celebrated to reflect the rich history, diverse society and the unique heritage of Australia. On the Gold Coast, Australia Day is celebrated by all residents and visitors. The Australian of the Year awards is also held on this day where people who have made outstanding contributions to Australia are recognised on this special day.

The main event has been held on The Great Lawn at Broadwater Parklands in Southport between 4pm-8pm. There has been over 20 food trucks and BBQ’s as well as plenty of activities for the kids and local musicians playing at the main stage. To finish off the day, there is usually a fireworks display at 7:45 pm.

Other highlights included the JJ Richards ‘Aussie Activities Zone’, where you can relive the fun of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games and give beach volleyball a try down by the Broadwater. The little athletes of your family will also love the ‘Mini-Commonwealth-Games’.

Also to support our drought-stricken farmers – don’t forget to head down to the Rural Aid Australia stand and donate a gold coin or purchase some of the available merchandise.

In 2019, the event was headlined by Mason Rack Band; the winners of the Gold Coast Music Award’s 2018 Best Live Act, and supported by an impressive line-up of local talent.

With so many things to see and do, the Australia Day Celebrations are a fun day out for the whole family. So come on down to the Gold Coast to celebrate all things Aussie!

    • Hi Glenys,

I have searched many of the official websites and forums and I can’t seem to find any information about fireworks being at paradise point this year (they have had it in the past though and there is fireworks during NYE).

Just in case it is on, perhaps try giving the council a call at 1300 GOLDCOAST (1300 465 326).

      Thanks
      Michael

      • Hi Chris,

Refer to our post, but in previous years the main event has been held on The Great Lawn at Broadwater Parklands, Southport between 4pm-8pm. There has been over 20 food trucks and BBQ’s as well as plenty of activities for the kids and local musicians playing at the main stage. To finish off the day, there is typically a fireworks display at around 8pm.

Other highlights have included an Aussie Sporting Zone with activities from the Gold Coast Suns, the Gold Coast Titans and Queensland Cricket. There will also be heaps of other activities spread all over the Gold Coast, including RSL lunches, beach cricket and live music.

        Best regards,
        Jess
